Susan G. Komen Crafting Challenge

Hope you are all doing well. The last few days have been intense: a lot of deadlines, a lot of work to do. Blake and I are really working on “letting things go” so we don’t have quite so many trips to town or responsibilities to take care of… because.. ya’ll…. we tired. I think I have finally maxed myself out. Maybe I need some good downsizing/cleaning out the place sessions? It seems to happen every 6 months or so.

I have taken up working out again. It means having to drop some other “to-dos” from my life to allow me the time and energy to enjoy some activity every day. It feels wonderful and I’m hoping I don’t lose the momentum because it really has become a stress reliever. The only reason I even have a moment to work on this is that Blake is gone visiting a friend, Violet is working on dinner, and Isa has found a dog bone to entertain herself with. I’ll take whatever time I can get.

Today is National Jelly Roll Day and so we put up a last-minute 20% off sale on 2.5” strips on our website. You can shop them here. Use the code SEWJELLY20 to get your discount. The sale is going through the end of the weekend (Sept 18th). Blake got this cute picture below, but I was in the hot tub when he did it so I was a little freaked out to walk back into the retreat sewing room to find a random stack of jelly rolls out. Maybe it’s the quilter version of crop circles appearing in your backyard.

And because I’m a glutton for punishment, I’ve started a new challenge for the month of October: The Susan G. Komen 4 Week Crafting Challenge. They are partnering with Joann Fabrics to raise money for breast cancer research. I still don’t fully understand the challenge yet, but from what I do gather you set up a Facebook Fundraiser (you can find mine here), and people pledge money in exchange for something to do with crafts - I think you make 4 crafts to donate to those affected by breast cancer. Like I said, I’m not super sure yet. I know some people are still angry at The Susan G. Komen Foundation for some questionable and controversial funding decisions, but I have two good reasons to participate; 1. I have a cousin who is currently fighting breast cancer, and 2. I’m genuinely curious as it’s different from the other quilt-related challenges I have participated in or heard about. I’ll be interested to see what people end up making and how the whole idea works. You can participate by joining through the Facebook group (here). Some people have already started posting their crafts and crafts from last year and they’ve been beautiful. I think Joann Fabrics is participating by somehow matching the money raised.

October is definitely around the corner. It’s my favorite month - by far. Blake’s already brought out some fall decorations, and we’ve gone fall clothes shopping for the girls. Now, I need to find my Scentsy and schedule for our Christmas photos with a photographer. I want to get a family photo each year, plus I need some updated Thank You cards for my customers. I’m sure some of my more extended patrons will be surprised to have another, almost toddler, baby pop up in our family. One of the best parts about our business has been the people we’ve seen enough times to build a relationship with. Their emotional support has moved mountains for us (no pun intended).

Wishing you all the best. Please keep an eye out for the Turtle Hand Batiks I have coming in soon. I’ll be sure to post when we get some more of their beautiful panels.
